Definetly not sharing, thank goodness.

But Possibly the Ghibli, the proportions are similar.

I just kind of assumed it was shared with the Ghibli. both cars seems close in size like you said also drive train lay out.. I’m perfectly ok with them building a fun downmarket car on that platform. and it makes sense why would they not use the same for each?

ok yeah, it does according to Autoblog

“Technically speaking, the Ghibli is built on the new E-segment platform from Fiat that will be shared with an upcoming Alfa Romeo and the future Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger . It will also serve as the bones for the next-gen Maserati GranTurismo .”

and that all makes perfect sense!

Possibly Ghibli, possibly next gen Charger/300. Definitely not 200.

Just found this quote from an autoblog post about the Ghibil:

“Technically speaking, the Ghibli is built on the new E-segment platform from Fiat that will be shared with an upcoming Alfa Romeo and the future Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger . It will also serve as the bones for the next-gen Maserati GranTurismo .”

In this day and age there is no such thing as a model-specific platform.

so it IS big... that’s disappointing.

Or that just means it scales. The Alpha platform scales from the ATS to the CTS.

well it is the “range topping” model. so hold out for smaller ones to come. I have seen a Ghilib in person and they are not nearly AS big as a 300c. but no it’s not small.

But whats got me interested now is how will they market this car. if the Ghilib can be had with the same engine and tranny as the Giulia Quadrifoglio for $69,800 before options. and they said the Alfa will start at like $62k but can soar higher with options. I wonder what the real difference between the two would be to drive me one way or another. I think their goal here is to mirror the Chrysler/dodge images. Maserati being the luxury brand. maybe a littler softer around the edges but more plush with higher end materials and options. The alfa will be the muscle brand. The two already differ in the sense the alfa should come in lighter with the use of carbon fiber for the hood and roof. which i do not believe the Ghilib does. so same power but less weight on the alfa. then I bet the differences start to pile up. Such as the suspension. Instead of the skyhook thing which is ment to soft the ride and smooth it out will we see something more sporty? or are they gonna share that? I get it FCA. and I think I like it! also keep the Alfa’s cheaper and more accessible, I don’t believe alfa should be an exclusive brand.

Not necessarily, it could be sharing platform bits in the same way the Golf and Passat are on the MQB platform and the next Polo will be as well. Those cars share a common dimension, the width at the firewall, I believe, maybe even the whole firewall itself, and structure in front of that firewall, but are modular behind that to accommodate cars of different sizes.

That’s not esplicitly true. What else uses the Mustang’s platform? Or the Corvette? Or the Miata (yes, I know there’s a Fiat coming out, but there’s no other Mazda that uses that platform)?

They exist, they’re just not used for volume sellers. Because that would horribly dumb.

The previous Mustang rode on a platform developed from the one underpinning the Jag S-Type, Jag XF, Ford Thunderbird, and Lincoln LS. Meanwhile the Fusion shares a platform with 3 other cars, the Focus shares one with 4, and the other cars in the lineup (sans Mustang) share with at least 1 other.

GM is even worse, each of its platforms seems to have a minimum of five vehicles each spread across its many brands. Often two cars in a brand’s lineup will even be based on the same platform (Malibu/Impala, ATS/CTS).

The general formula for modern car brands seems to be that every car has a crossover based on it, as well as a partner in a different marque, and the next size up/down car in the lineup will be based on a stretched or shortened version of the same platform.

I think you’re onto something. I think what they meant by range topping model is that they have thus far only shown the Quadrofoglio (sp?) which is the 510 HP twin turbo M3 fighter. This is the model they are projecting to start at $62k. The lower trim models will be cheaper.

I also think you are right about scaling, this is poised to do battle with the 3 series/ C Class while the Ghibli is E Class/5 Series sized.

So it’ll be possible to have a manual Charger?

Like I said, bespoke platforms exist. They’re just not used for volume sellers. None of the vehicles I mentioned have their architecture used in any other vehicle in that automaker’s lineup.

COUPE.

Preferably 3-door fastback coupe, with a nicely powerful engine, manual gearbox, and AWD.

But somehow I doubt that AWD and manual gearbox will coexist, even though this new Alfa will have both as options... they are probably mutually exclusive, like many other cars have been, with only the automatic gearbox offering the AWD mechanicals.

It is getting rarer all the time... Subaru and Audi to be the bastions of offering manual gearboxes with AWD... but even those are getting rarer... and coupes with that are almost unheard of.

A5 might be the only one left...

Alfa should build an A5 competitor, with a lift back, though.

Trunk lids are a practical limitation that is not required, merely traditional.

If they don’t do a coupe, then I’ll wait to see what an AWD 5-passenger mid-size CUV will look like on this platform. Perhaps an affordable vehicle with Lamborghini Urus’ slick, sporty profile 5-door hatchback profile, but Giulia’s curves and prominent triangular grille, and underpinnings, with a rear-biased AWD system, and reasonably taut suspension and handling response.
